About The Striper Recount
The Striper Recount explains NOAA’s August 2026 correction to its recreational striped bass estimates, with a 4-minute cartoon song and seven short interactive pages you can work yourself.
Who made this
Produced by Luyen Chou and GotOne for the American Saltwater Guides Association (ASGA). ASGA is a conservation group of recreational anglers, guides and fishing businesses. GotOne is a catch-logging app for anglers, at gotoneapp.com, and The Striper Recount is part of GotOne Labs, its free tools for saltwater anglers. The Striper Recount is not a product of NOAA or the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and neither agency reviewed it.
Facts and opinions
The pages explain what the data shows. ASGA’s opinions appear only in boxes labeled “ASGA’s view”.
Where the numbers come from
- NOAA Fisheries, Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP): updated recreational catch and effort estimates for 1981 to 2025, reflecting the improved Fishing Effort Survey, published August 2026. Fishing Effort Survey research and improvements and the estimate updates log.
- NOAA Fisheries: the side-by-side test of a revised Fishing Effort Survey through 2024, which mailed the survey every month and asked about one month at a time. Test of a Revised Fishing Effort Survey, 2025 Study Report (February 2026).
- ASGA’s presentation of NOAA’s old and corrected estimates, September 22, 2026. The yearly values on pages 1 and 3 are read from its charts, so they are approximate until NOAA’s published series replaces them.
- Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC): Atlantic striped bass, with the benchmark stock assessment, Board meetings and public comment periods.
- Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries: M. Dean and others, Revisiting the recreational release mortality of Atlantic striped bass (preprint, 2026).
- Page 4’s fishing-rate example (6.9 million of 34.5 million) uses 2022 figures from a 2023 stock assessment example for fishery managers, as presented by ASGA.
Numbers are rounded. Where a page adds figures together, it says so, and those sums are ours, not official figures.
How it was made
Lyrics, script, drawings, animation and interactives by Luyen Chou. The music was generated with Suno from the original lyrics, and Kit’s voice lines were made with ElevenLabs. The film’s look is a tribute to 1970s Saturday-morning educational cartoons.
Dates
Numbers are current as of NOAA’s August 31, 2026 release. The benchmark stock assessment is under way, and the What happens next page will be updated when it comes out. Last updated October 16, 2026.
Accessibility
Every sung and spoken line is captioned in the video, and the full lyrics are on the home page, under the video. Each interactive describes its picture in text for screen readers, and the animation shortens if your device is set to reduce motion.
